Has the Time Finally Come?

When I first started quilting many years ago, I was on fire.  I quilted every pattern I saw, including a scrappy Storm At Sea quilt.  It was not made with paper piecing or with templates, but I just cut the pieces using the pattern's measurements.  This quilt stressed me out and I think it is the reason why I now avoid angles!

When my sister saw it, she loved it and said she wanted one.  I was so happy, I immediately agreed, but I was burned out on triangles.  For over 10 years now, she keeps asking me when is she going to get her quilt.  I keep telling her that I will make her any other type of quilt, but she always says no.

Last year, I thought I would try again and use a Storm at Sea paper pieced block that I found on the net.  But, I could not get the pieces to line up correctly.

Last night was the first Friday Night Sew In (FNSI) of January and I tested a paper pieced Kaleidoscope blocks using scraps.  These lay flat and are 6.5 inches square.

Now, I am just wondering if I can make a whole quilt using these blocks because they are a bit time consuming to make.  Oh well. She has waited over 10 years for this quilt, what is 10 more a few years more.

  1. This is really funny...earlier today I was wondering what a scrappy Storm at Sea would look like and made a mental note to look for one. Before I could even Google or check Pinterest, here yours was! I love yours! Sorry it stressed you out, though. Your kaleidoscope blocks look perfect!

  2. Storm at Sea is THE pattern that ALWAYS blows me away. I loved it since the first time I even thought of starting a quilt ... but it intimidates me to the max!! I have some fabric set aside for it but never cut it. Or should I say still, because I haven't given up on the idea of making my own.
Yours is soooo beautiful it almost give me the spur to start mine ... almost! I understand that you see the little imperfection in it but we don't. So relax and enjoy your accomplishment because to me it is quite a task and I admire you for doing it. Congratulations. It's BEEEAAAAUUTIFUL!
P.S. I wouldn't mind looking at more pictures of it if you wanted to show more. :)

  3. Both blocks are wonderful but I am not keen on making them. Your quilt is awesome and the Kaleidoscope blocks are great.

  6. LOve your quilt from 10 years ago. How long did it take to make? I think if I tried something with so many angles, I would break out in hives.

  7. I've admired so many "storm at sea" quilts from afar and would love to make one but seeing as I seem to be one of the slowest quilters in the world - it may be on the "to do" list for some time! Yours is fabulous! I shall watch the progress of the kaleidoscope quilt with interest!

  9. Great story, love your storm at sea quilt, such lovely color combination. Fully understand your siter wants one like it, no matter how long it takes. Where there is a beginning, there is also an end.
    Greetings,

  10. You should be able to use the tri Rex ruler set to help with a lot of the cutting for storm at sea.
