WIP - First FMQ Project

I had been staring at my new Janome all weekend, kinda feeling overwhelmed.  I finally decided that it was time to just do it.  I pulled out my notes from my Free Motion Quilting class with Elizabeth Hartman of Oh Franson and pulled out my class sample to practice a bit.

Then I found this vine mini that I recently made for a Craftsy class.  Making pebbles has been my favorite design and I thought it appropriate to use on this mini.

This is my first project doing free motion quilting and I think that I did rather well.  I worked on trying to vary the size of the pebbles.  I am surprised at the texture and how the quilting made the applique pop out.

I have a stack of tops that need quilting, but I am not sure if I should practice small or just jump in and go large.  I am the type of person to just jump in, so I have a feeling that I will be working on those tops next.

Linking today to WIP Wednesday.

  1. nicely done! Personally, I think pebbles are difficult to do well and you've nailed it. Now jump in on large top. You can do it!

  2. Also visiting today from WIP Wednesday - I too love this pebble design and have been waiting to use it on a project. I have only quilted using free-motion quilting and it is amazing to me the effects and dimension that can be created - especially eye-catching when paired with applique like you have - great job by the way for first time - doesn't look like a first timer's effort. Pebbles are so much fun!

  3. I know the thrill of getting oriented to a new machine (although it's been years and years for me!)... glad you jumped right in! Your pebble quilting looks great.

  4. A couple of weeks playing around on the machine and it will feel like an extension of you. You did an ace job of the pebbles, it took me hours to get them right.

  5. What Janome do you have? I got a MC6500 about 2 years ago and do love it--though I dream of getting the Horizon someday! Oh to have a free arm again... Your quilt is beautiful, the pebbling and applique are stunning together!

  7. I think your first try turned out incredibly well. I like the project as a whole. It is very cheerful and spring-like.
