String Trees

I love reading blogs, they are so full of inspiration! 

This week, I had planned on getting the quilting started on my tulips quilt but I found a blog that had so many beautiful projects.  I was reading through the posts over at Crazy Mom Quilts and loved the project in progress on the September 16th post.  I just knew I had to try that! 

Since I never work with solids, I went to JoAnn's to pick up a few colors.  It was very fortunate that the Kona solids were on sale this week.  I have all the panels made and hope to get the top together this weekend.  Now, I just need to figure out what fabric to use for the backing.

Tulip top completed!

The tulip blocks are together and I really cant say enough about how much I like this top.  My mom, who wont even look at an art quilt or a modern quilt, wants this quilt.  I am not sure if she will get this one or another quilt, but I believe that I will be making more of this pattern.  My mom is the quilt photographer and now I realize just how hard it is to get a decent quilt picture.

All my other quilt dogs never seemed to touch a quilt.  I have many pictures of them sitting beside a quilt with just their nose laying on a corner of a quilt.  This new quilt dog, however, was just walking through the living room after eating his dinner and stopped to pose on the tulips.  Though when caught, he didn't move away from the quilt he just rolled over and played dead.

Today, my family and I participated in the 9/11 Heroes Run at Ellington Field in Houston, Texas.  http://www.travismanion.com/

It was a very hot day, but it was all for a good cause.  We were glad to be a part of this event and hope to be back next year.

A Finish

Well kinda.... the top is finished.  I don't dislike it as much as I used to, but I decided to stop at the lap quilt and not cut additional squares for a full quilt.

Design Wall Monday

The more I look at my tulip blocks for the Georgia Quilt, the more I really like it.  And I think that my tastes are moving from traditional quilts to modern quilts.  (I am even thinking I may like to learn to machine quilt instead of hand quilting).

This week I have been searching through my stash for some red. white, and blue material to make a quilt for the Thank You Quilters (thankyouquilters.org).  Being from a military family, this is a cause that I want to support. 

I noticed that alot of my stash is traditional patterned and what I describe as "country".  So I found a pattern in a book from the library, "Fast Favorites from McCall's Quilting", which I thought would work with my stash.  For a week I have been cutting squares while watching Hulu and this past weekend I got to work.

The blocks went together fast.  But the more I worked on it, the more I really did not like it so much.  I remembered something I read about falling out of love with a quilt and I guess that is what happened.  Today, I put the rows together and it is looking better but I think it will end up being a lap quilt or throw. 

Its been so long since I have posted.  Much has happened, but I do have a finish.  The pattern came from a library book and I cant remember the title right now.  I had the top for awhile, I just hadn't had time to finish the quilting.  I am a hand quilter so finishing can sometimes take time.  I am pleased with the quilt.

Just One Star

I took a break from my tulip quilt to work on another project.  Being from a military family, I just could not pass up an opportunity to participate in Moda's Just One Star project.  The deadline is Sunday, May 1st.  I finished 11 blocks for this event and hope to get them in the mail on Wednesday. 

Triangles are not my favorite piecing style, but I think that I did alright.
