Festival of Scrappiness

Just a quick blog tonight.  I know that I am cutting it close, but I wanted to make sure that I had an entry into the Festival of Scrappiness at Stitched In Color.   My favorite quilts are scrap quilts and I love to see what everyone else has created from scraps.

I knew when the festival was announced, that I wanted to enter my Georgia Quilt's Tulip.  I had thought about entering the Mod Mood quilt, but its very dark tonight and I cant seem to get a good photo.  So, I present my string tulip quilt.  This was my first attempt at hand applique and the quilt is hand quilted.  It is so bright and cheery that every time I see it, I can't believe that I made something so bright.

Design Wall Monday - Houses

Today I am linking up to Design Wall Monday at Patchwork Times.

What's on my design wall today?  Not too much, I am working on cutting scraps to make more houses, like the ones made during this past Friday night sew in.

I am happy to finally say that it is finished!  The quilt that started my blog - String Tulips from the cover of Georgia quilts.  The blocks are hand appliqued (my first attempt at applique) and the quilt is hand quilted in a free-style pattern. 

Last Monday, I had just started a new rendition of Kaffe Fassett's Tilt.  The top is now complete.

I am not sure if I am liking the pinks and yellow, but I do like the first Tilt made from aquas and greens.  Both quilt tops are made from a fat quarter bundle of Olivia's Holiday by Tina Givens.

WIP Wednesday - Georgia Quilt

I am linking up today with WIP (Work In Progress) Wednesday at Freshly Pieced.  This past weekend I started quilting my Georgia Quilts String Tulips.  I am free hand quilting each tulip with some in-ditch quilting and echo quilting.

The more I see this quilt, the more I love it!

Scrap Quilts Part 1 - Strips

It is quite interesting to read through blogs about how people manage their scraps.  A scrap is defined so differently.  For me, a scrap is any small piece of fabric and anything less than 1” is waste.  I have a friend that throws out anything less than a 4” square.  Oh No! I can do so much with that.  To me, that 4” square is 4 1 ½” squares and a 1” strip. 

I have recently depleted my stash of scrap strips on 2 projects.  The String Tulips based on the Georgia Quilts book cover really used a lot of strips.  As can be seen by the bright colors, I had many strips left over from charity baby quilts.  This quilt is currently in the process of being quilted and if I can get out of the habit of starting new projects, then maybe I can finish it before Christmas.

The other project is my String Trees.  This is based on a project seen at  Crazy Mom Quilts.  Because these strips are smaller than my tulip pieces, I was really able to use many scraps and now my scrap bags are almost empty.  This quilt is in the piecing stage.  I sat down to complete the top and realized that I am 2 blocks short.  Of course with such a small amount of scraps available, I need to find some time to go through my stash to find more scraps.  This quilt is already being coveted by my mom which is kinda weird to me because it is a modern quilt and mom is Mrs Traditional Quilter.  Hopefully I can get this top completed and quilted in the near future.

Tulip top completed!

The tulip blocks are together and I really cant say enough about how much I like this top.  My mom, who wont even look at an art quilt or a modern quilt, wants this quilt.  I am not sure if she will get this one or another quilt, but I believe that I will be making more of this pattern.  My mom is the quilt photographer and now I realize just how hard it is to get a decent quilt picture.

All my other quilt dogs never seemed to touch a quilt.  I have many pictures of them sitting beside a quilt with just their nose laying on a corner of a quilt.  This new quilt dog, however, was just walking through the living room after eating his dinner and stopped to pose on the tulips.  Though when caught, he didn't move away from the quilt he just rolled over and played dead.
