Design Wall Monday - Made in Cherry Throw

Well, I sure have been stitching away while watching the Olympics.   I finished my July color palette challenge piece, so I started on another quilt based on the Made in Cherry quilt pattern.  I have already made a large quilt using this pattern which I called a Neapolitan Star.

 

This time I chose to make it in a smaller size based on the dimensions from the Made in Cherry Quilt Along at Pins and Bobbins.  Also, I was able to use my stash.  The top is about complete and the Olympics just started.  I think I may start on another throw, but this time use greens.

Design Wall Monday - Wiggly Bags

I have had a busy weekend working on several projects.

*  Wiggly Bags

I have never heard of a wiggly bag and I had to google it.  It is basically a bag that is used to hold a hickman or a "wiggly" line for a child who is undergoing cancer treatments.  A tutorial and more information can be found at Strawberry Patch Ramblings.  The bags are made with two 6 inch squares, twill tape, and velcro.  I tried to use a mix of fabrics, including those that might appeal to a teenager.  18 bags were completed and are ready to be mailed out.  I stopped making them, only because I bought up all the twill tape at my Joanns.  

 *  4 Patches 4 Hope

While I was making the bags, I thought I would stop by 4 Patches 4 Hope to see if they needed more 4 patch blocks.  Regina started this project last year to honor her mother, and now her older sister is being treated in the same facility where her mum was treated.  Please stop by and send her some encouragement.  A box full of patches is also ready to be mailed.

Behind the Seams - My Oldest Fabric

Today I am linking up to the Behind the Seams - Fabric party at Fabric Engineer. 

The topic is to blog about the oldest fabric in your stash.  I have had a few stash purges, but I think I found an old WIP that features the oldest fabric in my stash.  Can you guess the year that I bought this fabric?  

It is white cotton with silver sparkle stars and the year "2000".  I remember seeing this fabric many places in 1999 right before the year 2000.  I bought 2 yards and thought I would make a Year 2000 quilt but never could come up with a design.  As years passed, I couldn't think of a project to make using it and it didn't seem right to donate it.  (I mean, I couldn't understand someone wanting Year 2000 fabric.)

I had an idea to use this fabric for yo-yos, since no one would notice the Y2K material.  I think the yo-yos look cute with the sparkly material.  I think I will use the yo-yos to make a garland for Christmas decorations.

This is a snippet of the project that I started from Jane Sassaman's new book. I have had to modify it somewhat because I am working with fat quarters and not yardage. So far, I am really liking the look.

I Won A Book!

I am posting tonight using the Blogger app which is very limited, but soon I will be getting my new laptop and hope to be back to my old routine.

Back in May, I went on a shopping spree and got a fat quarter bundle of Jane Sassaman's Garden Divas . I was thinking of starting a new project when I saw the blog hop featuring Jane's new book "Patchwork Sassaman Style". Even though I don't win things, I somehow knew this was my chance. Well - I won on the first day of the hop!

I got the book in less than a week and have already started working on a project. There are a lot of quilts featured in this book and a lot of information. I have never made a project with such bold fabric before, but her advice is to let the fabric work for you - so that is what I am trying to do.

This blogger app is so limited that I cannot insert a link, but check out her blog for other stops on the hop. The hop continues until the 24th, so there are additional books available. I will post my project soon.

Color Palette Challenge - June

Hello all.  This month's color palette was chosen by Vicki Welsh at Field Trips in Fiber.

When I first saw this month's colors, I was inspired to work with a vintage sheet.  However, my mom wouldn't give me any of hers (bummer).  I went to my LQS and then to Joann's, but didnt find anything that matched what was in my mind.  I did find in the remnant bin at Joann's a piece of floral fabric.  Now I am not at all floraly, but thought it may work. 

 

This month, there were several new ideas that I thought I would try out:

1. Using a traditional block, but making it very small.  Maybe a monkey wrench, shoo-fly, or star.
2. Inspired by the recent EZ Dresden quilting challenge blog hop, I thought I may try using my EZ Quilting Rulers by Darlene Zimmerman (a dresden & a traingle).  I have never used the rulers before.  

Now, I have never made a dresden before, but since I wanted a mini block I thought I would work with the 2 1/2 size plate.  Since these plates seemed so small I figured that I would make 3 mini dresden flowers.  I cut the plates or blades out of scraps.  I think that the tedious part was ironing each blade to create the pointed petal ends.

Once I started sewing the blades together the flower is made pretty fast, but I did not have a mini block.  I am still trying to figure this one out.  My flowers measure about 7 inches across.  The flowers were hand appliqued to the floral fabric with a straight line running stitch.  The stems were also appliqued with stash scraps. 

It was hand quilted and hangs in my mom's house.  I am glad that I managed to just get this piece finished to be posted on this month's Color Palette Challenge at Patchwork Times.

Today, I feel like I spent more time trying to get a good shot of this mini than I did quilting.  A small break in the rain today, but no sunny shots.
